We do it for the love of it

Back on my feet, back to doing the things I love:

Solving complex technical problems, and bringing the community together.

This summer has been rough.

Between the ACL reconstruction, the crutches, the physical therapy, and the slow, unglamorous work of just getting my leg to bend again, it has been a season of sitting still when I wanted to be moving.

So many of you have checked in, sent notes, asked how the knee is doing, and cheered me on even when there was not much to show for it yet. That support has meant more than you probably realize. Building something new is hard enough. Building it while recovering from an injury and surgery is harder. Knowing people are in my corner made the difference.

I've been taking it slow, but I am walking without crutches now, and more importantly, I am back to building.

Which brings me to two things I am excited to share:

We've been building, testing and playing with the DSX software

First: the Exchange software had its first real test day.

After a few weeks of building, testing, adjusting and playing; yesterday we took Daily Special Exchange to a busy Los Angeles post facility to see how it would behave in a real, networked, secure environment.

At an actual editorial workstation, we loaded the first version of Daily Special Exchange.

We ran through the full experience of a member arriving, logging on, and working on a project in Premiere, throwing in a few of the weird things that inevitably come up in a real session, and trying to break things where we could. Then we watched the software clean up and reset the machine at the end, to keep the next member's session secure.

It worked!

This is the proof-of-concept I mentioned back in July finally becoming real. It is early, it is rough around the edges. But it works, and it's secure, and that matters more than it being polished right now.

Second: our first official Daily Special event is September 9th.

It's called Post, Interrupted, and our friends at Fancy Film are helping us organize, generously hosting at their Silverlake space.

Wednesday, September 9, 6–9 PM

We're bringing together working freelancers, facility leaders, community organizers, and people building practical responses to talk through what independent post professionals need now, what solutions already exist, and how we make those solutions more visible and useful.

It's going to be a small, participatory evening, a moderated conversation that opens into a group discussion, not a conventional industry panel.

Space will be limited. But since you're on the mailing list, as promised, you get early access.
